There are numerous articles highlighting the benefits of owning a dash cam, emphasizing reasons such as having first-hand evidence and monitoring driving habits. While dash cams are undoubtedly useful, let’s explore 5 reasons why you might consider not having one (after all, this is not Amazon, and we’d hate to see you invest in things you don’t truly need).”
1. You don’t have a car or a driver’s license
It’s generally a rite of passage that people get a driver’s license as soon as they turn 18. Most young adults love that as it gives them the freedom to go anywhere they want. But, some may wait longer due to various reasons, and thanks to extensive public transportation systems and the rise of rideshare services, many people don’t drive as much. Some don’t even have a car.
Since dash cams are designed for installation in vehicles, if you don’t have a car or a driver’s license, then a dash cam may not be a necessity. This also applies if you don’t own a truck, van, motorcycle, ATV, tractor, boat, etc., as there are dash cams designed for various modes of transport.
Of course, unless you are feeling extra generous and want to gift one to your rideshare driver. Or perhaps you might want one for your own protection. A dash cam does protect the car, the driver, and the passenger, just like how the cameras on-board a bus protect the driver and its passengers.
2. You don’t want your other half to know where you really were when you said you were working late last week
Maybe you were at a guys night at your buddy’s. Or perhaps you were playing beer pong at the local frat house. Unfortunately, all your other half needs to do is take the microSD card out of your dash cam and plug it into the computer. All your travels will be mapped and stamped with date, time, location, and driving speed. Of course, no one says you can’t pop in a new, lower capacity microSD card and blame the “missing” footage on loop-recording.
Or maybe you got yourself a very understanding partner, and flowers and chocolate work like a charm every single time.
But for those of us not so lucky, it’s wise to think twice before getting a dash cam. Oh, and if you’re serious about covering your tracks, you might want to turn off your smartphone, too. I guess you didn’t know that some of the apps on your phone track your whereabouts.
3. You don’t need the constant reminder that you are a traffic hazard
We understand that not everyone is a perfect driver. Those dash cam videos showcasing less-than-ideal driving moments may hit close to home for some. Dealing with insurance calls and explaining another mishap can be frustrating.
We get it – having a dash cam that captures your driving challenges might not be high on your list right now. Even though many acknowledge that dash cam footage is a valuable tool for self-improvement, finding the time for it can be a challenge. Besides, your presence on social media might already be educating others on how to share the road with you.
4. You never leave home without a GoPro strapped to your head
You’re a seasoned video blogger armed with the GoPro Hero 9, capturing every moment of your life in stunning 5K @ 30FPS. Who needs a 4K UHD 150-degree unobstructed road view when you can showcase a 155-degree angle featuring your steering wheel, dashboard, a Junior Whooper in hand, and a glimpse of the traffic up front? Your audience is interested in you and the destination, not the journey. Dash cams may be for those swayed by the ‘it’s about the journey’ sentiment, but you’re savvier than that.
Sure, an extra camera for the back of your head would be cool, but at $400 each, it might have to wait for the next Black Friday or Boxing Day. Even then, you’d probably prefer splurging on extra batteries – after all, capturing your entire drive and beyond requires quite a bit of power.
5. You don’t really care if your car gets hit, scratched or stolen
You’re not bothered by the constant worry others have about their cars – the fear of scratches, dents, and the meticulous care with dent repair, paint touch-ups, polish, and wax. After all, why spend more money on a depreciating asset! If you’re indifferent to the possibility of your car getting hit or stolen, it’s likely you don’t need a dash cam – perhaps what you truly need is a new car.
Please, don’t buy just for the sake of saving
We understand it’s not ideal to feel pressured into buying a dash cam just because we’re currently hosting one of our biggest sale events of the year. It’s important to make practical purchasing decisions, and if a dash cam isn’t something you see yourself using, it might be hard to justify the expense. However, if you enjoy unboxing videos – a trend gaining popularity on social media – you could consider making a dash cam unboxing video for some likes and shares. Who knows, your unboxing career might take off like that kid on YouTube!
Now, if none of the scenarios above resonates with you, it’s possible that a dash cam could still be a great idea. Perhaps you know someone who drives and cares about their car or passengers.
